Chronic Pain: A painful condition that persists for 6 weeks or more; pain that persists even after a precipitating injury is healed.
According to physician and well-known writer Deepak Chopra, M.D., the root of chronic pain and physical and emotional disease can be thought of as “black holes”, or voids, in the normal energetic network of the body. These voids can be due to trauma, toxins or ongoing emotional stress. The application of appropriate energy in the form of microcurrent, light or sound can help the body fill in these voids, relieving pain and promoting homeostasis.

Information: The innate intelligence that directs all cells, tissues and life processes. Information in encoded in DNA in the nucleus of most cells, and works through genetics as well as an incredibly complex and constantly changing network of neuro-peptides, neuro-transmitters, hormones, subtle electric currents and bio-photon activity.
The recognition by many contemporary scientists that the subtle information systems of the body are the true basis of healing and regeneration strongly supports the use of microcurrent therapies for pain and disease.

Energy: Defined as “the capacity for work or vigorous activity”. The basic energy unit, the electron, is freed for physiologic function in the body through cellular respiration (the Krebs cycle) and other metabolic functions. Energy is expended for all bodily functions through the ATP molecule, which takes on available electrons through the Krebs cycle. All pain relief and healing requires energy from ATP, and is associated with electrical changes in cell membranes, which allow charged ions to migrate into cells. Microcurrent electro-therapy has been shown to dramatically increase the availability of ATP within cells, thereby speeding healing processes. (See Research Studies section).

The number of electrical pulses occurring in a set period of time (usually measured in pulses per second). Each tissue, organ and gland has characteristic frequencies. A vital aspect of electro-medicine is resonance – the ability for an electric current at a specific frequency to affect or influence a target tissue or function through resonance with its molecular structure, and influence on bio-chemical messengers. A wide range of precise frequencies can be selected on the Acutron Mentor, and commonly used and effective frequencies are pre-programmed into the treatment pre-sets.

Polarity: A quality of any mass possessing an electro-magnetic field. Just as magnets and the Earth have North and South poles, so does the human body. Some of the most powerful and effective pain relieving treatments with the Acutron Mentor utilize polarized probe or pad placements that correct imbalanced polarization of the body, or help to balance positive and negative ionic electric fields that may be perpetuating neuropathy or chronic pain.

Preset Treatment Menus: A preset is a treatment protocol that can be set up with the touch of a button. Each electro-medical treatment requires selection of current intensity, frequency, polarity, waveform, modulation, timing and sometimes other parameters. Presets are a convenient way to greatly simplify setup by allowing a set of parameters to be easily set up with one command. The 19 presets pre-programmed into the Acutron Mentor are based on treatments used over a 15 year period by practitioners throughout the United States, that were found to be reliable and effective. Up to 21 additional presets may be programmed into the Acutron Mentor by the user.

Microcurrent Therapy: The practice of applying low-intensity electric currents, usually at low frequencies that match the body’s natural pulse rate, for pain relief and energy-balancing treatments. Microcurrents, or microamps, are electric currents with intensity less than one milliamp. Microcurrents are measured in the millionth of an amp range. Microcurrent therapy works so well because it easily interfaces with the body’s own innate electrical activity, enhancing normal, pain-free functioning.

Milliamp Current: Electric currents measured in the thousandths of an amp range. By definition, milliamps are 1000 times stronger than microamps. Milliamp currents are used in TENS units and most other conventional electric stimulation devices, and may be appropriate for many acute pain conditions, edema, muscle spasm, and other conditions that require rapid suppression of the pain signal. The Acutron Mentor offers both milliamp and microamp outputs through each of its four independent channels.
In most patient cases, microcurrents provide longer lasting and satisfactory results than milliamps.

Interferential: A complex form of electro-therapy that utilizes four pad or vacuum electrodes, with each set of two set to a different out-of-phase frequency. The electrodes are arranged to pass harmonic currents throughout a joint or bodily region. Interferential is especially effective for acute low back pain. Microcurrent interferential may be combined with active motion techniques for accelerated rehabilitation and re-education of injured areas.

This principle states that pain sensations may be reduced or eliminated by filling afferent pain nerves with electrical stimulation, thereby preventing the actual pain signals from reaching the central nervous system. This manner of “fooling the body” may be capable of producing a temporary nerve block to reduce pain, but rarely addresses the actual root of pain. For this reason, the long term outcomes of conventional electrical stimulation are poor to fair.

Milliamps are currents strong enough to elicit muscle contractions and tingling to throbbing sensations in the painful areas.
